Motion Sickness Relief Program

How to Cure Your Motion Sickness

Motion Sickness is the feeling you get when the motion you see with your eyes is different from the motion you sense with your inner ear. It usually happens when you are moving in a car, train, airplane or boat. Motion sickness progresses from a feeling of uneasiness to sweating and/or dizziness. This is can be followed nausea and/or vomiting.

Why do I get motion sickness?  Or Why doesn’t everyone get motion sickness?

Even though your eyes and inner ear may be healthy and free of disease, you can experience motion sickness if the eyes do not function optimally. Unlike the inner ear (semicircular canals) that is fixed in your head, the eyes each have six muscles that have to move and allow the two eyes to function together as a team. Any deficiency in binocular vision or “eye teaming” including 3D vision can cause the person to develop some aspect of motion sickness. You also may have difficulty with central peripheral processing. When you see motion out of the sides of your eyes but none in front of you (like riding in the back seat of a car) then this mis-match of motion in different parts of your vision combined with the sensations coming from the inner ear causes confusion in the brain and you may gets symptoms of motion sickness.

How can I be cured of this problem?

Luckily we, and other doctors of optometry, have discovered that patients undergoing treatment for focusing, eye teaming and central peripheral awareness also tell us at the end of their treatment, they no longer experience motion sickness. Our Vision Therapy Team at Rancho Santa Fe Optometry has developed an eight (8) week program to teach these skills and others to sufferers of motion sickness and eliminate their symptoms. Some graduates of this program, have told us that they can even read while riding in a car!

What do I need to do if I am interested in curing my motion sickness?

  1. Have a current complete vision and eye health examination with Dr. Weiss to rule out any eye health problems and assess your level of binocular vision and focusing. You must also be free of any inner ear disease.

  2. Take a pre-therapy survey to determine the level of your symptoms, review your findings and see if you qualify to eliminate your motion sickness in eight weeks.

  3. Participate in our eight week plan with office visits and home therapy.

  4. Be free of motion sickness symptoms!!!
